The Great Lakes Portfolio contains a set of 30 images that use the waters of the Great Lakes as metaphor for the human spirit, and in which I explore the meaningful connections between those who know the Great Lakes and their own spirits. These images span the range from highly altered to straight photography in order to make the point that we need to relate to these lakes as though they are living beings and that we share that life within ourselves.

The GREAT LAKES PORTFOLIO project arose in a workshop on Creativity led by John Paul Caponigro in June of 2011. One major emphasis of that workshop was to encourage the development of a focused body of work. To define that work, the goals and the outcomes as well as the motivation, we did word associations to discover our subconscious motivations and attitudes, areas for creative effort.

My word associations, when thinking about those images of mine that I have liked the most, invariably cycled around and back to just three or four words:

Grace
Peace
Spiritual
Mystical.

The Great Lakes Portfolio of images on this site is the first set of images to come to life from that study. I chose the Great Lakes for the venue because they have long appealed to me in a mystical sense, and I live in their midst so they are available.
