Artist's StatementBio:Since the beginning of human times, people have always attempted to understand their position in the world, the human condition, by making images of the things that they honored, that challenged them, that they feared, that told their story. We are all part of a grand story for which we do not know the beginning, the plot, or the ending. But we can work to understand and appreciate the present. Visual art is a huge part of that process. Visual art from the past is sometimes the only record we have, and the art we produce often illuminates the direction we are going or the problems we are facing as humans in society. I am a photographer and I want to tell my part of that story. That includes photography of the natural scene, of people and life and living; of industry and energy and power; of relationship. I want to find the meaningful around me and to bring it to the image. Currently, my portfolio consists of images from our local area of Northwestern Michigan, The Bahamas, Belgium and Holland, Portugal, the west coast of Africa including Casablanca, Dakar and The Gambia, and from the Atlantic Islands of Sao Vicente (Cape Verde Is.) and Brazil. Also included are images from the Provence region of Southern France and from New England and Washington State. My approach to photography is principally a “straight” photographic treatment. I use a high-resolution digital image capture process and a color-managed workflow to achieve consistent results in both print and web images. While every photograph is an interpretation, I do not typically digitally manipulate my images to produce photographs that emulate watercolor or other media. These are photographs and they either stand or fall on their own merit. My typical fine-art photograph is issued in limited editions of 25 to 50 and is printed on archival quality papers with archival pigment-based inks. My work is currently represented by and exhibited at the Old Mission Tavern/Bella Galleria on Old Mission Peninsula, The Americana Collection, the Firefly Restaurant, McMillen's Custom Framing, and formerly at the Belstone Gallery in Traverse City, the Blue Heron Gallery in Elk Rapids, and had three images on display for one year at the State of Michigan Governor’s home in Lansing, Michigan. |
