Artist's Statement

Bio:

As did many others, I did my first photography at about the age of 12, graduating from a Brownie Hawkeye to the venerable Argus C3, a "Speed Graphic" 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 press camera, and progressing all the way to a 5 x 7 Deardorff view camera before returning to smaller formats. And now the approach is with a digital SLR that not only adds resolution but also improves noise levels in the image over models using smaller sensors.

My objective is to explore and to learn, to find beauty and meaning, and to share what I find with those who are interested. My subject matter is mostly the natural world, but I find myself interested in images of people, doing their work, living their lives.

I find that a single photograph is just an introduction to a story, and it takes several to get the whole story out. Traditionally, the art galleries have offered specialized shows to achieve that need; now we also have the web.

Educated as an engineer and physicist, a researcher in the telecommunications industry (Bell Laboratories, etc.) for over 30 years, it is natural that I find myself exploring both the digital world and the way nature presents itself to us. Look carefully at the colorful sun flower head shown on this site. The rings of the seeds in the head are arranged in spirals and mathematically fit in a number sequence known as the Fibonacci Sequence, discovered in the 1500s by an early mathematician of that name. It is a fascinating design even for those who have never heard of Fibonacci just because it pleases them.

Currently exhibiting at the Bella Galleria gallery on Old Mission Peninsula, at the Belstone Gallery in downtown Traverse City, and at the Bier Art Gallery near Charlevoix, I have previously exhibited at the new Gallerie Medici in Traverse City.
